Copper Kitchen Worktops

As well as being very on trend right now, Copper is very hygienic due to qualities called antimicrobs which kill off infections, this is why it is often used in piping to transport water to our taps in our houses. Below is some info on several of the common virus it kills off…

This is a statement sent out by the Copper development association:

“Laboratory testing shows that, when cleaned regularly, uncoated copper alloy surfaces kill >99.9% of the following bacteria within 2 hours of exposure: MRSA, VRE, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterobacter aerogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and E. coli O157:H7. Copper surfaces are a supplement to and not a substitute for standard infection control practices and have been shown to reduce microbial contamination, but do not necessarily prevent cross contamination or infections; users must continue to follow all current infection control practices.”

Copper and Covid-19

We are now learning that some of the old Victorian hospitals were a lot more hygienic than first thought due to their brass beds and door handles and push plates, to emphasise this point below is a chart showing the different timescales SARS Covid 19 can live on surfaces, most of them are days, copper is 4 hours!
The surfaces to which the virus had been applied were incubated at room temperature, samples were collected at different time intervals, which were then used to calculate the amount of viable virus.
Keep in mind: Although SARS-CoV-2 can be detected on these surfaces for a particular length of time, the viability of the virus, due to environmental and other conditions, is not known.
